Where: 9 Lever Street (later moved to Market Street)
Virgin Records was founded by Sir Richard Branson in 1976. A Manchester branch was subsequently opened on Lever Street and it was popular with students in the city. By the end of the 1970s the shop moved to a more prominent location on Market Street.
” It was an old school record shop with booths so you could preview your records. It always smelt of patchouli and musk with a slight hint of something herbal. Cool knowledgeable staff and very ‘hot chicks’ from the Uni amongst the customers. I bought many rare and difficult to find vinyl albums. Nowhere else could you buy imported Krautrock and Prog in the pre-internet days off the rack.”
