Silvana was established by John Simon, who had arrived in Manchester from Germany in 1933 and established the Phoenix Mill in Ancoats in 1937. The company sold direct to the public, a business created in 1954 when an order for C&A was rejected and John Simon decided to sell off the ladies coats to employees and friends.
Based over several floors, it sold seconds coats. This was where we went once a year for new winter coats. It was a huge treat and a bus journey from east mcr to get there. I remember no end of coats and a lovely smell of woollen fabrics as you walked around various floors of the mill.
