Pygmalia was a small clothing boutique located down the narrow alleyways off Cross Street. The shop was originally a Rowntree’s Cafe. Pygmalia opened in November 1965 and was partly owned Tony Mansfield (of The Dakotas), his wife Brenda and his sister, Elkie Brooks. During its heyday in the 1960s it was a fashionable shop for Manchester’s younger population, with a similar vibe to Carnaby in London. Pygmalia was often visited by musicians and celebrities.
” It was a lovely little boutique and I often shopped there with friends.”
